The Ferrari California was designed by Pininfarina and Ferrari began its production in 2008. The California is powered by a front mounted V8, which was a first for Ferrari, since traditionally only V12 engines were front-mounted, and V8 engines mid-mounted. The engine was originally a naturally aspirated 4.3L, which varied for subsequent models: A lighter, more powerful California 30, and a turbocharged 3.9L California T. The powertrain is rear wheel drive via 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. The California was at the time, the most aerodynamic Ferrari road car ever made, and introduced many novel technological features.
The Ferrari California was designed by Pininfarina and was primarily intended to attract new Ferrari owners with its grand touring style. It is considered a landmark car for Ferrari in that it represents a number of concepts being used for the first time in their road cars, including front-mounting V8 engine, enabling a stable 47% front to 53% rear weight distribution, hard top convertible with a folding metal roof, multi-link rear suspension, Ferrari road car to offer stop/start technology and the first with direct in-cylinder fuel injection.
Although not a first, an upgraded F1-Trac system that delivered variable power distribution to the rear wheels, enabling 20% faster acceleration out of corners. The grand touring California was available with two passenger seating configurations. The first option (2+2), included two rear seats that are limited in space. The second option (2+), presented a bench storage area instead of the rear seats. The aerodynamics were perfected over many wind-tunnel hours and achieved a very low aerodynamic coefficient of 0.39 (the lowest of all their models at the time).
The “Handling Speciale” package was developed as part of the update in 2012. Overall, it does away with some driving comfort trading it for reduced body roll, higher-speed cornering, and better handling during aggressive vehicle operation.
The California 30 is one of the initial models that make use of the special Ferrari program “Tailor Made”, where interested clients work with Ferrari’s personal designers in Maranello to assist in decision making throughout the entire process.
