The Ferrari Dino 246 GT was an evolution of the Dino 206 GT, with a larger V6 engine and a wheelbase extended by 60 mm. Apart from the longer body, the design of this classic Ferrari has hardly varied, except for a longer engine hood and the repositioning of the fuel tank cap. The car was a huge commercial success, so much so that three series were produced in its life cycle. When production ceased in 1973-4, demand was still high.
A version of the Ferari 246 for the US market was launched at the end of 1971, identifiable by vertical rather than recessed indicators, on the front panel and position lights on the front and rear wings. The 246 GTS, with the folding roof finished in black, was presented in the spring of 1972 at the Geneva Motor Show. Apart from the soft top, it was also recognisable by the disappearance of the small rear window, replaced by a sail-shaped metal panel with three rectangular vents for ventilation of the passenger compartment. At the end of the production cycle, wider Campagnola wheels were offered with a different design from the previous Cromodora, along with wider wheel arches. The seats were also replaced by more elaborate “Daytona” like seats with two thin strips of leather in the centre, which in English-speaking markets were known as “Chairs and Flares”.
As mentioned above, the cars were built on a 2340 mm wheelbase chassis, made in the same line as the preceding 206 GT. It was modified twice during its production run and had the internal reference codes 607L, 607M and 607E respectively. The even-numbered numbering sequence for the Dino chassis, which began with the 206 GT, continued to be used throughout production.
These luxury cars also featured servo-assisted ventilated brake discs, initially Girling for the “L” series cars and ATE on later models, and independent suspension in the same layout as the 206 GT. The body shape was virtually identical to that of the 206 GT, except for the aforementioned details.
